What is Schengen Visa?
Slovakia is part of the Schengen Area – territory of 23 countries of the European Union + 2 associated countries of the European Economic Area, which agreed on the abolition of border controls between themselves.
By applying to Slovak Visa, foreigner applies to so-called Schengen Visa which allows him/her to travel inside of the Schengen Area without any restrictions. Schengen Visa holders do not need aditional special visa for Slovakia.

Where to apply for visa and when?
Foreigners who are subject to visa requirements and who wish to enter the Schengen Area with the primary purpose of stay in Slovakia, are required to submit an application for visa at the local Slovak Embassy or Consulate-General. If the foreigner has a residency permit in other country than the country of his nationality, he/she can apply for visa at the Embassy / Consulate-General in the country of his current residence.
In some cases, the decision about granting a visa can take some time. Foreigner should apply for visa as soon as possible, but not earlier than 3 months before the planned trip. The statutory deadline for granting visas is 30 days after the date of application receipt.
Nationals of countries with which there are signed agreements by the European Community on easier and faster granting of visas are exceptions. In these cases, the deadline for a decision is set at 10 days after the receipt of a complete visa application. The following countries have such an agreement with European Community: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Macedonia, Moldova, Russia, Serbia, Ukraine.
What type of visa?
Which type of visa the foreigner needs, depends on the length and purpose of the stay in Slovakia. There are 5 types:
- Schengen visa type A = Airport transit visa
- Schengen visa type B = Transit visa
- Schengen visa type C = Entry visa
- Long-term visa D
Schengen visa type A: Airport transit visa
Under normal circumstances, for stop over or transfer between two international flights the foreigner can remain in the international transit zone at the airport without any visa. However, some nationalities are subject to visa requirements, even if they do not leave the international transit zone. Airport transit visas entitle the foreigner only to pass through the international transit area of airports.
Schengen visa type B: Transit visa
This visa entitles foreigners who are traveling from one non-schengen country to another non-schengen country to pass through the Schengen States. The transit cannot exceed 5 days.
Schengen visa type C: Entry visa
This visa entitles foreigners to enter the Schengen countries for a visit or several visits, but the duration of the stay cannot exceed 90 days within a period of 6 months from the date of the first entry. A visa can be granted to one or more entries.
Long-term visa D
Long term visa can be given for the purpose of granting a residency permit in the Slovak Republic or for the purpose of fulfilling obligations arising from international agreements or where it is in the interest of the Slovak Republic.
With this visa the foreigner is allowed to stay on the territory of Slovakia during the period of its validity and it allows him/her to travel accross Schengen countries, but the duration of the stay cannot exceed 90 days in any period of 6 months.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to submit the visa application personally?
Yes, you have to submit the visa application personally on the embassy or consulate and you need to explain the purpose and circumstances of your trip. The visa for children is applied by their legal representative (usually parents).
In certain rare cases the foreigner does not have to be personally on the embassy when applying for a visa. For getting such an exception, it is necessary to contact the Embassy or Consulate General.
What happens if my visa application is rejected?
Visa isn’t legally eligible and the foreigner is not informed about the reason if the visa was rejected, except when he/she is a family member of a EEA citizen, a refugee or a foreigner whom has been given subsidiary protection (it does not apply if he/she is a family member of a Slovak citizen).
Can I appeal against the refusal of a visa?
If a visa application was rejected to a family member of the European Economic Area, to a refugee or a foreigner whom has been given subsidiary protection, the Embassy / Consulate-General of the Slovak Republic is required to issue a document about the decision. Options about how to appeal against the refusal are mentioned in the operative part of the decision document.
Is my visa valid only for the Slovak Republic?
Territorial validity of visas are specified on the visa sticker in the line “Platné pre/Valid for”. Visa may be granted with effect for all Schengen Member States. In this case, the visa sticker says “Platí pre: Schengenské štáty” (Valid for: Schengen states) and the holder of such visa is allowed to move freely throughout the Schengen Area within the validity period.
If the territorial validity is limited, the visa sticker will say “Platí pre: Slovenská republika” (meaning that the visa is only valid for the territory of the Slovak Republic) or “Schengenské štáty – GR” (meaning that the visa is valid for all Schengen states except Greece).
With my visa, can I travel outside the Schengen Area and then enter it again?
Short-term Schengen visa can be granted to one or more entries. If you hold a visa for only one entry and you leave the Schengen Area, your visa is no longer valid for the re-entry. Multiple-entry visa entitles you to multiple entries and exits from the Schengen Area within the validity period.
If I got Schengen visa from the Slovak Embassy, am I allowed to enter Slovakia through an airport which is located outside of the Slovak Republic?
Yes, with a valid Schengen visa you can enter Slovakia through any border crossing – through any airport in the Schengen Area.
What should I do after the arrival in Slovakia?
A foreigner, who holds short-term visa, long-term visa or his/her entry is not subject to a visa, is required to inform a police office within three working days about the location and expected length of stay. EEA nationals must meet this obligation within ten working days of the entry. If he/she is staying at a hotel or other accommodation, the owner of the accommodation facility is required to do that instead of the foreigner.
Can I extend the visa when I am in Slovakia?
Since 1st of December 2008, in rare cases the visa may be extended to 90 days in 6 months. Visa is extended by the Ministry of Interior, only if the foreigner cannot leave the Slovak Republic due to natural disasters, humanitarian grounds or serious personal reasons. Other cases (tourism, family visits, etc.) do not justify the extension of the visa.

Hallo Sir,
Please would you advise for the medical visa?
I am Iraqi from Iraq, can I apply in Ankara-Turkey or Damascus-Syria? For the time being, Baghdad-Iraq is a dangerous place.
I choose Slovakia for its reasonable treatment cost related with me and affordable.
Kind Regards,

If you come to Slovakia you can get a permanent residency first, then after 5 years of living here in Slovakia, you can get the citizenship. If you get permanent residency you can work in Slovakia legally, of course.

Dear Anuj,
Well, this is a very complicated situation. For the issues related to Britain – we unfortunately are not allowed to give you any information, as we provide information only related to Slovakia. So why they have not give your passport back yet, or why they refused your visa application, etc., we do not know the answers.
I suggest you to try to contact the Slovak Embassy in UK, if they can give you any information about a possibility of avoiding going back to India now, as you are married so Slovak citizen. They could give you better advice, if there is chance to go to Slovakia within the 28 days you have and manage to stay there too.
In case you will have to go back to India: for the visa to Slovakia contact the Slovak embassy in India. Please see the contact below:

In order to attend a training arranged by our Slovakian principal in Bratislava, my colleague and I have to go to Slovakia (from Pakistan) in the mid of Decemeber 2009 sponsored and supported by our employer. We have also got the invitation letter from there, but now to apply for Slovakian visa we have to apply through Slovakian counsulate in Iran. I have studied the visa requirements but still have few querries to reply.
Do you require Chamber of Commerce certificate from my company?
Can we apply 18-20 days before our arrival in Slovakia ?
Do we need to appear personally at Tehran counslate ?
How much time(tentative) does is take to respond a visa application ?
Where can we find exact check list of documents required for business / training purpose visa application ?
Since we do not have Slovakian embassy in Pakistan that is why we are unable to have exact details to apply for Solvak visa.
Thanks & regards,

Dear Nadeem,
Information about the documents needed for visa, see http://www.slovak-republic.org/visa-embassies/. You can apply 18-20 days before your arrival, but the embassy officially has 30 days to issue the visa, so I would contact them as soon as possible and explain that you need to go to Slovakia in less than 30 days. I believe they will understand and help you. Yes, you will have to go there personally. I suggest contacting them immediately.

I am a citizen of the United States of America. I have been accepted to a program to study in Bratislava for the spring semester. I did not see the United States on the list of countries needing a visa, but from what I understand is that I can visit for 90 days. My question is if I need to apply for an extension as the visit will be longer than 90 days? If so can I do it at the embassy in Slovakia, or should I do it before I leave to study in early February?

However, I would strongly recommend you to contact the Slovak embassy in Washington: http://www.slovak-republic.org/visa-embassies/of-slovakia/#usa before you travel, because some of the documents will be easier to obtain when you are still in USA.

Dear Muhammad Arif, hypothetically you could start your journey in the Schengen Area wherever you want, but practically the Schengen Visa is issued on a certain travel ticket (flight ticket) and on a certain accommodation document. So, you are forced to start your journey in the country where you got the visa from.

Yes, he still needs visa to Slovakia and he should contact the embassy. From the article above: “If the foreigner has a residence permit in other country than the country of his nationality, he/she can apply for visa at the Embassy / Consulate-General in the country of his current residence.”
So, he can apply for visa at the Embassy in Egypt: http://www.slovak-republic.org/visa-embassies/of-slovakia/#egypt or at the Embassy in Autstralia: http://www.slovak-republic.org/visa-embassies/of-slovakia/#australia

Hi
I was born in india and have been living in the UK for many years. I am also a British citizen. I am getting married to my girlfriend who is originally from slovakia. we were planning to goto slovakia and get married there in front of her family. I have a UK passport and certificate of no impedement from the UK registry office where I live, notarary letter from lawyer stating citizenship, residence in UK, free to marry etc etc and also copy of my indian birth certificate. All of this has been apostilled by the foreign office in the UK. I have just been informed that the slovak authorities now want me to travel to india and also apostille my birth certificate in India. This is ridiculous. What sort of system is this? I dont live in India for many many years and have nothing to do with it anymore other than my being born there. Can slovaks not accept my documents being apostilled at the UK foreign office? So does this mean that they dont recognise my UK citizenship? Afterall how would UK have issued me with a British passport if my original birth certificate hadnt been genuine? So this also means that the Slovak local registry office where we want to get married does not recognise my UK passport.
Regards
Oz

well, this is realy strange. As far as I know, they should not have any problem with your papers as you are a Brtish citizen and also a British passport holder. But if they have informed you, that the apostille is necessary, it has to be like that. But honestly, I do not understand that either.

Dear Helen,
yes, you have to confirm your booking of a ticket when applying for visa. Documents regarding finance and solvency: The amount of money a foreigner has to prove, must be appropriate to the length and purpose of stay and cost of living in the destination country or countries of the Schengen Area. On the borders of Slovakia, a foreigner can be called to demonstrate sufficient funds for the whole stay (as stated in visa), which is 57,-EUR per person per day.
But in your case it will probably be easier to get the visa to Germany and than travel to Slovakia. Germany belongs to Shengen area, so there is no problem of visiting Slovakia than.

Dear Sir or Madam,
My name is Lukas, I am from Slovakia and I would like to find information regarding Nepalese citizen’s eligibility to apply for visa to Slovakia.
I have met my Nepalese girlfriend in Sydney, Australia, where we were studying together. I am coming back to Slovakia on 21 June 2010 and I would like to help my girlfriend to come to Slovakia, too. She is currently in Nepal as she has finished her studies in Sydney and her visa expired.
As we fell in love, obviously we strive to be together, and try to find the legal possibility for my girlfriend to come and live in Slovakia with me. Due to the fact that I was living in the UK before from July 2008 to September 2009, we would possibly like to go there to pursuit our postgraduate studies but I am not sure whether my girlfriend would be eligible with Slovak visa. As I am from EU, I do not have any legal obstacles. At the moment, I also have a deferred admission at Oxford Brookes University in the city of Oxford for a Master’s degree from the last year with an already paid deposit.
We are considering to get married in Slovakia to be together and either stay living there, but most favourably, go and pursuit the studies in the UK.
I am not sure, what type of visa does she need to apply for so as to staying in Slovakia and possibly moving to UK for our studies. Mainly, which embassy does she need to apply to? As far as I have researched it appears to be India or Germany where she has to apply.
In regards to the complexity of the problem, I am looking for the core information that we have to adhere to and satisfy the requirements so that she can apply as soon as it would be possible because I am travelling back home in less than two months.
I think that there will be a requirement of an invitation letter from my family, but I am not aware what type of document it is, where to obtain it and what supplementary documents are required.
We would not like to apply just for visit visa, if applicable, so that she will be able to stay in Slovakia and be able to get married. If there is any other way, could you please advise me about it?
I would be very glad for your information regarding my concerns and would appreciate your response.
Thank you very much for your help in advance.
Yours sincerely,
Lukas Kasan

Hi Lukas,
For visa she should apply either in India: http://www.slovak-republic.org/visa-embassies/of-slovakia/#india or if she has a residence permit in Autstralia, she can apply there: http://www.slovak-republic.org/visa-embassies/of-slovakia/#australia
If you get married she can apply for the EEA family member card and she could go and work in UK with you.

To whom it may concern,
I have a question regarding the extension of visas. In your website, it is said:
“Since 1st of December 2008, in rare cases the visa may be extended to 90 days in 6 months. Visa is extended by the Ministry of Interior, only if the foreigner cannot leave the Slovak Republic due to natural disasters, humanitarian grounds or serious personal reasons. Other cases (tourism, family visits, etc.) do not justify the extension of the visa.”
According to the website, if a foreigner would like to extend his or her short-term Schengen visa due to natural disaster, such as volcano ashes, he or she needs to apply for visa extension in the Ministry of the Interior.
So, could you please be more specific? The Ministry of the Interior is very big. To whom should foreign nationals talk? Which person or which section of the Ministry of the Interior is responsible for visa extension? Could you please tell us the contact information?
Looking forward for your reply.
Thank you in advance.
Dakujem pekne.
Majte sa.

Greetings,
I am engaged to a Canadian and am American myself. My fiancé has accepted a job in Bratislava for this upcoming September. I too am looking for jobs in the area. I would obviously like to stay at my soon to be husbands side. If in the event that I do not find a job before our departure, would it be more adventitious to get married in the states? if we did this, what sort of visa would i need to apply for? Or, if we get married in Bratislava (preferred), what are the conditions under which I can apply for a long term stay? Would I do this after my arrival or before?
Thank you for any assistance you can give. I have contacted the Slovak Embassey as well and am waiting to hear back. Any further clarification or buzz words you could provide would be much appreciated.
Best,
AL

Amanda, US citizens don’t need visa to Slovakia, so it’s more about getting a residence permit. And in that case, you either need to find a job in Slovakia, or it would help if you are a married couple. Application for a temporary residence permit should be made in person abroad at the Slovak embassy.

s n, I am really sorry for your situation, but unless you are a family member of the European Economic Area, a refugee or a foreigner whom has been given subsidiary protection, visa isn’t legally eligible and the foreigner is not informed about the reason why the visa was rejected. So you can’t complain to anyone. :( But if you want to give a shot, try to contact and explain your situation to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs: http://www2.mfa.sk/en/contact__us/mfa_contact
But I am pretty sure they wil reply you in the same manner as I did. Again, I’m sorry for your expenses.

Hi, I’m from Peru, I went to Slovakia to visit my boyfriend and I stayed there for 3 months. I just read the information that every foreigner has to go to the Police to state her/his stay in the country. However I didn’t do this, actually i didn’t know this when I went there and I’d like to know if there’s any problem regarding this. I stayed exactly for the time I got the visa, no more no less. I’m thinking to travel again to Slovakia and I’d like to know how to proceed this time.
I hope you could help me with this information. Thank you so much in advance.

Hello!
I am Farhad from Afghanistan.
I did apply for salvok visa, bt they refused my application.
I am nt upset that they refused my application bt i am upset that y they did nt tell the reason of my visa application.
U know better that the embassy is nt in afg bt i went iran or i stayed there fr 40 days. I was living in guest house so i spent so much money bt y do u nt tell the reason of refuse visa, even i completed the all requirments.
They annoyed and bothered me because i called them and ask abt my visa. They said yes, come in and pick up visa at 2 oclock. They took my passport and asked me come 3 o clock after ur passport. When i went 3 oclock ,they said wait the councel is writting all records of visa in computer. And they said to me come at 3 30. When i went there. I rang the bell, one iranian came out with aggresive face that wait wait wait as much as four hours, five hours. Bt i said its ok. Then i rang again they give my passport without visa. Now judge is it human rights? At least tell me y my visa is refused. I am the owner of v clean heart, i cant bear dis kind of action. Bye bye. If u love humanity, u will reply, if u dnt love it then u will nt love humanity.

I’ve read some of the questions and reply.I like them. I would also hope to get good information regarding my queries. I am from Nepal and now I am studing in Bratislava. I have visa type D. I am having summer vacation these days. So, I would like to go to Nepal in August and attain some exam there but the problem is I’ve visa and permit till 31st August. When I went through type D visa,I foun “This visa does not entitle the foreigner to enter other Schengen countries on the way back. On the return journey the foreigner is required to have Schengen Visa”. If I go Nepal in august I would return back on 20th august then I would have visa up to just 11 days i.e. till 31st august. So, would I be able to return from Nepal with 10 days remaining visa? Please let me know as soon as possible. Regarding this information I am going to book the ticket for Nepal.
