What is Schengen Visa?
Slovakia is part of the Schengen Area – territory of 23 countries of the European Union + 2 associated countries of the European Economic Area, which agreed on the abolition of border controls between themselves.
By applying to Slovak Visa, foreigner applies to so-called Schengen Visa which allows him/her to travel inside of the Schengen Area without any restrictions. Schengen Visa holders do not need aditional special visa for Slovakia.

Where to apply for visa and when?
Foreigners who are subject to visa requirements and who wish to enter the Schengen Area with the primary purpose of stay in Slovakia, are required to submit an application for visa at the local Slovak Embassy or Consulate-General. If the foreigner has a residency permit in other country than the country of his nationality, he/she can apply for visa at the Embassy / Consulate-General in the country of his current residence.
In some cases, the decision about granting a visa can take some time. Foreigner should apply for visa as soon as possible, but not earlier than 3 months before the planned trip. The statutory deadline for granting visas is 30 days after the date of application receipt.
Nationals of countries with which there are signed agreements by the European Community on easier and faster granting of visas are exceptions. In these cases, the deadline for a decision is set at 10 days after the receipt of a complete visa application. The following countries have such an agreement with European Community: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Macedonia, Moldova, Russia, Serbia, Ukraine.
What type of visa?
Which type of visa the foreigner needs, depends on the length and purpose of the stay in Slovakia. There are 5 types:
- Schengen visa type A = Airport transit visa
- Schengen visa type B = Transit visa
- Schengen visa type C = Entry visa
- Long-term visa D
- Visa D + C
Schengen visa type A: Airport transit visa
Under normal circumstances, for stop over or transfer between two international flights the foreigner can remain in the international transit zone at the airport without any visa. However, some nationalities are subject to visa requirements, even if they do not leave the international transit zone. Airport transit visas entitle the foreigner only to pass through the international transit area of airports.
Schengen visa type B: Transit visa
This visa entitles foreigners who are traveling from one non-schengen country to another non-schengen country to pass through the Schengen States. The transit cannot exceed 5 days.
Schengen visa type C: Entry visa
This visa entitles foreigners to enter the Schengen countries for a visit or several visits, but the duration of the stay cannot exceed 90 days within a period of 6 months from the date of the first entry. A visa can be granted to one or more entries.
Long-term visa D
Long term visa can be given for the purpose of granting a residency permit in the Slovak Republic or for the purpose of fulfilling obligations arising from international agreements or where it is in the interest of the Slovak Republic. This is a national visa valid only for the Slovak Republic and it allows the foreigner to pass through the territory of one or more Schengen countries in order to reach the territory of Slovakia. This visa does not entitle the foreigner to enter other Schengen countries on the way back. On the return journey the foreigner is required to have Schengen Visa.
Visa D + C
With this visa the foreigner is allowed to stay on the territory of Slovakia during the period of its validity and for the first 3 months it allows him/her to travel accross Schengen countries.
What is needed for getting visa?
The following must be attached if applying for Schengen visa:

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to submit the visa application personally?
Yes, you have to submit the visa application personally on the embassy or consulate and you need to explain the purpose and circumstances of your trip. The visa for children is applied by their legal representative (usually parents).
In certain rare cases the foreigner does not have to be personally on the embassy when applying for a visa. For getting such an exception, it is necessary to contact the Embassy or Consulate General.
What happens if my visa application is rejected?
Visa isn’t legally eligible and the foreigner is not informed about the reason if the visa was rejected, except when he/she is a family member of a EEA citizen, a refugee or a foreigner whom has been given subsidiary protection (it does not apply if he/she is a family member of a Slovak citizen).
Can I appeal against the refusal of a visa?
If a visa application was rejected to a family member of the European Economic Area, to a refugee or a foreigner whom has been given subsidiary protection, the Embassy / Consulate-General of the Slovak Republic is required to issue a document about the decision. Options about how to appeal against the refusal are mentioned in the operative part of the decision document.
Is my visa valid only for the Slovak Republic?
Territorial validity of visas are specified on the visa sticker in the line “Platné pre/Valid for”. Visa may be granted with effect for all Schengen Member States. In this case, the visa sticker says “Platí pre: Schengenské štáty” (Valid for: Schengen states) and the holder of such visa is allowed to move freely throughout the Schengen Area within the validity period.
If the territorial validity is limited, the visa sticker will say “Platí pre: Slovenská republika” (meaning that the visa is only valid for the territory of the Slovak Republic) or “Schengenské štáty – GR” (meaning that the visa is valid for all Schengen states except Greece).
With my visa, can I travel outside the Schengen Area and then enter it again?
Short-term Schengen visa can be granted to one or more entries. If you hold a visa for only one entry and you leave the Schengen Area, your visa is no longer valid for the re-entry. Multiple-entry visa entitles you to multiple entries and exits from the Schengen Area within the validity period.
If I got Schengen visa from the Slovak Embassy, am I allowed to enter Slovakia through an airport which is located outside of the Slovak Republic?
Yes, with a valid Schengen visa you can enter Slovakia through any border crossing – through any airport in the Schengen Area.
What should I do after the arrival in Slovakia?
A foreigner, who holds short-term visa, long-term visa or his/her entry is not subject to a visa, is required to inform a police office within three working days about the location and expected length of stay. EEA nationals must meet this obligation within ten working days of the entry. If he/she is staying at a hotel or other accommodation, the owner of the accommodation facility is required to do that instead of the foreigner.
Can I extend the visa when I am in Slovakia?
Since 1st of December 2008, in rare cases the visa may be extended to 90 days in 6 months. Visa is extended by the Ministry of Interior, only if the foreigner cannot leave the Slovak Republic due to natural disasters, humanitarian grounds or serious personal reasons. Other cases (tourism, family visits, etc.) do not justify the extension of the visa.

If you come to Slovakia you can get a permanent residency first, then after 5 years of living here in Slovakia, you can get the citizenship. If you get permanent residency you can work in Slovakia legally, of course.

Dear Anuj,
Well, this is a very complicated situation. For the issues related to Britain – we unfortunately are not allowed to give you any information, as we provide information only related to Slovakia. So why they have not give your passport back yet, or why they refused your visa application, etc., we do not know the answers.
I suggest you to try to contact the Slovak Embassy in UK, if they can give you any information about a possibility of avoiding going back to India now, as you are married so Slovak citizen. They could give you better advice, if there is chance to go to Slovakia within the 28 days you have and manage to stay there too.
In case you will have to go back to India: for the visa to Slovakia contact the Slovak embassy in India. Please see the contact below:

Hope this helps you. In case you have any other questions related to Slovakia, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

In order to attend a training arranged by our Slovakian principal in Bratislava, my colleague and I have to go to Slovakia (from Pakistan) in the mid of Decemeber 2009 sponsored and supported by our employer. We have also got the invitation letter from there, but now to apply for Slovakian visa we have to apply through Slovakian counsulate in Iran. I have studied the visa requirements but still have few querries to reply.
Do you require Chamber of Commerce certificate from my company?
Can we apply 18-20 days before our arrival in Slovakia ?
Do we need to appear personally at Tehran counslate ?
How much time(tentative) does is take to respond a visa application ?
Where can we find exact check list of documents required for business / training purpose visa application ?
Since we do not have Slovakian embassy in Pakistan that is why we are unable to have exact details to apply for Solvak visa.

Dear Nadeem,
Information about the documents needed for visa, see http://www.slovak-republic.org/visa-embassies/. You can apply 18-20 days before your arrival, but the embassy officially has 30 days to issue the visa, so I would contact them as soon as possible and explain that you need to go to Slovakia in less than 30 days. I believe they will understand and help you. Yes, you will have to go there personally. I suggest contacting them immediately.

I am a citizen of the United States of America. I have been accepted to a program to study in Bratislava for the spring semester. I did not see the United States on the list of countries needing a visa, but from what I understand is that I can visit for 90 days. My question is if I need to apply for an extension as the visit will be longer than 90 days? If so can I do it at the embassy in Slovakia, or should I do it before I leave to study in early February?

Dear Derick, yes, you understood it well. For more than 90 days you should apply for temporary residency and you can do it after arrival in the Slovak Republic. However, I would strongly recommend you to contact the Slovak embassy in Washington: http://www.slovak-republic.org/visa-embassies/of-slovakia/#usa before you travel, because some of the documents will be easier to obtain when you are still in USA.

Dear Muhammad Arif, hypothetically you could start your journey in the Schengen Area wherever you want, but practically the Schengen Visa is issued on a certain travel ticket (flight ticket) and on a certain accommodation document. So, you are forced to start your journey in the country where you got the visa from.

to apply for National Visa “D” for 45 days. After reaching Slovakia I have to apply for TRP
because time is too short for visa processing and to get police clearace certificate from slovakia will take 1-2 months. I would like to know wheather I have to take transit visa because my fight is form Delhi (India)-Vienna- Kosice? Is it feasible to return back through the same route with this visa? Please let me know it as early as possible and oblige.

I am an Indian resident and I got an internship call from a company in Slovakia. So, kindly guide me what type of Visa I would be applying for? In addition to this, I need Schengen Visa also so I may be allowed to travel across other Schengen Countries.
The company would be sending me the work permit and all the needful documents for the Visa application. Please let me know what all documents are required for obtaining both the Visas and each and every detail about the same.

Yes, he still needs visa to Slovakia and he should contact the embassy. From the article above: “If the foreigner has a residence permit in other country than the country of his nationality, he/she can apply for visa at the Embassy / Consulate-General in the country of his current residence.”
So, he can apply for visa at the Embassy in Egypt: http://www.slovak-republic.org/visa-embassies/of-slovakia/#egypt or at the Embassy in Autstralia: http://www.slovak-republic.org/visa-embassies/of-slovakia/#australia

Your wife can apply at the Embassy in India: http://www.slovak-republic.org/visa-embassies/of-slovakia/#india and you can apply at the Embassy in Egypt: http://www.slovak-republic.org/visa-embassies/of-slovakia/#egypt OR you can both apply in the country where you originally come from.
